No Unix Authentication on the RealVNC Server
I installed the RealVNC debian 32-bit server package (downloaded from the RealVNC site) on a couple of debian 32-bit systems and the only authentication mechanism available is VNC authentication. There is nothing else in the drop down in the server options. Is there something I need to do to enable Unix Auth? I saw the article below but it couldnt make it work. Should I have used the generic script installer for Linux instead? I would like to get Raspberry Pi Desktop (x86) working more like a real Raspberry Pi in regard to logging in with the pi user so I can use it as a really lightweight and fast jump box (RealVNC Connect) installed in virtual environments such as Virtualbox.
What I think is happening here is that on Raspberry Pi OS and hardware we enable some additional features for free (built-in license and Home) such as Unix Password. On Debian and other platforms, we don't provide authentication types other than VNC Password for Home subscriptions.
Ah! I tried to get that answer using a support ticket but they just told me to come here. Is the Unix Authentication included with the pro version? I asked them that and was given a generic answer and how many computers and users were included in pro that didnt answer the question (from a noreply email no less).
I'm sorry to hear about your experience with our support team. It is RealVNC's policy that technical support is only available to paid/trial subscription holders, please see this link for more information: https://help.realvnc.com/hc/en-us/articles/360029423831
Unix Authentication is available with both Professional and Enterprise subscriptions. Regarding licensing, subscriptions are licensed "per computer/VNC Server" for Device Access so you would purchase a subscription for the number of devices you need to remotely access. You can sign up for a free 30 day trial for 10 computers here: https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/trial/
Excellent! Thank you so much for a real answer to this question. I think the VNC Connect pricing site needs to add Home to it's comparison table so things like this are more clear. https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/pricing/
