Setting up VNC Password

What is VNC Password?

If your computer does not have a password or you prefer to use a separate password for remotely accessing your computer then you can configure VNC Server to use a VNC Password instead of using your system login credentials.

How to set up VNC Password

Using RealVNC Connect v8

1. On the RealVNC Connect Home page, find the Remotely access this device panel on the right.

2. Under UNATTENDED ACCESS, click Enable unattended access.

3. On the Enable unattended access to this device screen, enter a password in the Set a VNC Device Password field.

• Click Show to check what you've typed before saving.
• Alternatively, click Use my System credentials instead to authenticate with your device login rather than a separate VNC password.

4. Click Save and enable unattended access to confirm.

Once saved, other devices can connect to this one at any time using this password — even when no one is at the keyboard.

Using the VNC Server Tray/Menu Bar icon

1. Locate the VNC Server icon. This is in the bottom right, by the clock, on Windows, or in the top right for Mac/Linux. You may need to click the little arrow to reveal additional icons if the VNC Server icon is not visible. Once you have located it, right click on it and click 'Options'.
         
2. Click 'Yes' on the UAC Prompt (Windows) or enter your Administrator Credentials (Mac/Linux).
3. Click 'Security', then change the 'Authentication' dropdown to 'VNC Password'.
   
4. Click 'OK'. You'll be prompted to set a password. Enter your chosen password (please ensure you use strong password), then enter it a second time to confirm it and click 'OK' again.
   
5. Try your connection from VNC Viewer again. You should see username greyed out and just a box for a password.

How to configure multiple VNC Password users

For Lite subscriptions, VNC Password only has one option - a single standard user.

For all other subscription types, VNC Password has three levels of users. These are Standard users, Administrator users, and ViewOnly and have predefined levels of access.

When you initially set up VNC Password it will default to a standard user. In this instance the username box will be greyed out and you will only be required to enter a password.

If you create an additional user for VNC Password, then it will start asking for a username. These are:

Standard user: user
Administrator user: admin
ViewOnly user: viewonly

You can change the password for each user by going to Users & Permissions, selecting the user and hitting the Password button.
