When running RealVNC Connect on macOS, there are certain permissions required so that it runs correctly. For example, you must grant the Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions to RealVNC Server. If you do not grant these permissions you will see a blank screen in RealVNC Viewer and/or have view-only access.
Please follow the steps below to set up RealVNC Server for macOS.
Screen Recording
When installing or connecting to RealVNC Server for the first time, you will be prompted to grant the Screen Recording permission, as shown below:
The end user will need to grant this permission so that you can view their screen.
To enable the permission click Open System Settings, then click the padlock icon at the bottom left to make changes:
When prompted, enter an administrator's username and password:
Enable the option for vncagent and then click the padlock icon again:
You will now be able to see the screen of your remote Mac.
Accessibility
When installing or connecting to RealVNC Server for the first time, you will be prompted to grant the Accessibility permission, as shown below:
The end user will need to grant this permission so that you can control their screen.
To enable the permission click Open System Settings, then click the padlock icon at the bottom left to make changes:
When prompted, enter an administrator's username and password:
Enable the option for vncagent and then click the padlock icon again:
You will now be able to control your remote Mac.
System Window Picker
When connecting to RealVNC Server for the first time, and then monthly afterwards, you will be prompted to allow vncagent to capture your entire screen and audio, as shown below:
We are working on an update to RealVNC Server that will not require this prompt in future.
Local Networks
When connecting to RealVNC Server for the first time, you may see a prompt to allow VNC Server to find devices on local networks, as shown below:
Allowing this permission ensures that you will not have any problems when making
- Cloud-brokered peer-to-peer connections
- Direct connections between RealVNC Viewer and RealVNC Server on the same network.
You can check if this is enabled and/or toggle it on or off in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.
Please follow the steps below to set up RealVNC Viewer for macOS.
Local Networks
When connecting to a RealVNC Server for the first time, you may see a prompt to allow VNC Viewer to find devices on local networks, as shown below:
Allowing this permission ensures that you will not have any problems when making
- Cloud-brokered peer-to-peer connections
- Direct connections between RealVNC Viewer and RealVNC Server on the same network.
You can check if this is enabled and/or toggle it on or off in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.
Please follow the steps below to set up On-Demand Assist for macOS.
App is downloaded from the internet
You must specifically allow On-Demand Assist to be opened as it is an application that is downloaded from the internet.
Click Open to allow the application to run.

When an end user runs On-Demand Assist for the first time, they will be prompted to grant the Screen Recording permission, as shown below:
The end user will need to grant this permission so that you can view their screen.
To enable the permission, direct the end user to click Open System Settings, then click the padlock icon at the bottom left to make changes:
When prompted, they need to enter an administrator's username and password:
Finally, they need to enable the option for On-Demand Assist and click the padlock icon again:
You will now be able to see the screen of the remote Mac.
Accessibility
When an end user runs On-Demand Assist for the first time, they will be prompted to grant the Accessibility permission, as shown below:
The end user will need to grant this permission so that you can control their screen.
To enable the permission, direct the end user to click Open System Settings, then click the padlock icon at the bottom left to make changes:
When prompted, enter an administrator's username and password:
Enable the option for On-Demand Assist and then click the padlock icon again:
You will now be able to control the remote Mac while connected using RealVNC Connect.
System Private Window Picker
When connecting to an end user with On-Demand Assist for the first time, and then monthly afterwards, the end user will be prompted to allow On-Demand Assist to capture their entire screen and audio, as shown below:
We are working on an update to On-Demand Assist that will not require this prompt in future.
