What is RealVNC Server Virtual Mode?
RealVNC Server Virtual Mode is a feature included with RealVNC Enterprise subscriptions that enables you to create virtual desktops on Linux systems. These virtual desktops exist entirely in memory and are separate from the physical desktop environment you would see when logging in locally at the computer.
How Virtual Mode Works
When you connect to a RealVNC Server running in Virtual Mode, you access a private virtual desktop that:
- Exists independently from the physical desktop of any locally logged-in user
- Runs in memory only and is visible exclusively to you as the connected RealVNC Viewer user
- Persists independently - remains active even if the local user logs out of their physical desktop
- Can run different desktop environments than the physical desktop if desired
- Remains active until explicitly destroyed - you can disconnect and reconnect without losing your session
Key Benefits
Resource Efficiency
Virtual desktops consume significantly fewer resources than equivalent virtual machines while providing similar isolation and functionality.
Multi-User Support
Multiple users can simultaneously access independent virtual desktops on the same high-powered computer, maximizing hardware utilization.
Application Isolation
Each virtual desktop provides a completely separate environment where users can run applications without interfering with other users or the host system.
Headless Server Access
Provides full graphical remote access to servers that don't have physical monitors or desktop environments installed locally.
Common Use Cases
Shared High-Performance Computing Deploy independent desktops for multiple users on a single powerful computer, making optimal use of available hardware resources.
Centralized Application Hosting Enable multiple users to run the same application simultaneously on the same computer while maintaining complete separation between sessions.
Headless Server Management Access graphical interfaces and applications on servers that operate without physical displays or local desktop environments.
Deployment Options
Standalone Mode
Run RealVNC Server in Virtual Mode manually when needed, creating virtual desktops on-demand for immediate use.
Virtual Mode Daemon
Configure RealVNC Server to run as a system service, automatically creating and managing virtual desktops as users connect.
Subscription Requirements
- RealVNC Connect Enterprise subscription
- A supported Linux operating system (Virtual Mode is Linux-specific)
- Sufficient subscription device capacity - each Virtual Mode session counts as 1 device in your subscription
