Mac Mouse Pointer not chnaging

When I use RealVNC to connect to my Windows and Linux devices the mouse pointer changes depending on what I am pointed to or if the system is busy it changes to the system busy pointer however when I am connected to the my MAC the mouse pointer is always the standard mouse pointer.   This means that if the MAC is displaying the Spinning Wait Cursor (the rainbow spinning cartwheel) and I am connected to it via a RealVNC Viewer session I cannot tell the status of a app.  How do I get the pointer to change?
