RealVNC Server claiming it hasn't been updated in 90 days

I've updated VNC Server with apt-get, and it's apparently the latest version (6.7.2). But the UI constantly warns, "Last checked for updates more than 90 days ago." Then there's a "launch Web page" button that simply takes you to the general RealVNC homepage, which says nothing about updates. I can find no other way to trigger an update check and shut this warning up. I've rebooted the server.

What's the story here?

Thanks!

    Hi,

You can force an update check by right clicking the VNC Server icon in the system tray and clicking Check for updates

    Thanks,

  • Thanks! It says there's an update to "VNC Connect" and lets you open the Web site, but there's no "VNC Connect" listed. It lets you download VNC Server or VNC Viewer; there is no "Connect."

So, let's say you try the "Download VNC Server" link for the hell of it. Oh now the page says, "VNC Connect consists of VNC Server and VNC Viewer." That's backward: This should be on the previous page.

The VNC Server download page for Raspberry Pi says, "If you have Raspbian Jessie or later, VNC® Server is pre-installed, so only download if your Raspberry Pi has a different Linux distribution."

Now what? Any idea why apt-get doesn't work? Just tried again after an apt-get update, and got:

    sudo apt-get install realvnc-vnc-server
    ...
realvnc-vnc-server is already the newest version (6.7.2.42622).

But the Web site shows 6.7.4.

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply. VNC Connect is the product name for the combination of VNC Viewer, VNC Server and the online portal, so there is no version of VNC Connect, as such. I will pass your feedback on to the team as I agree that is confusing messaging on our update site and messaging.

6.7.4 is not yet available in the Raspberry Pi OS repositories so you will need to manually download and install the deb file from our website to update to 6.7.4 for the time being.

    Thanks,

    Jack

  • This confusion extends into 2022 –

I ran down the same rabbit holes, on the Pi VNC say that 6.8.0 is available, website says 6.90, but pi repository says
"realvnc-vnc-server is already the newest version (6.7.2.42622)".
    Please ...

  • Hi Alfred,

We're in the process of preparing the updated versions for submission to include in the Pi repository.

  • Hi Jack, have same issue. My RPI4-8 has the server version 7.5.1 and my W11 has the viewer 7.6.0. The server defaults to the UNIX-authentication - which creats the error "Keiner der konfigurierten Sicherheitstypen wird von 3.3 unterstützt VNC Viewer" on connecting. Changing this to the RealVNC-authentication eliminates the error but does not connect. How do I tweak the server so that the backwards-competability works?

  • This issue appears to be ongoing. My Raspberry Pi 3 B+ running Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 (buster) is giving me the message Last checked for updates more than 60 days ago and there is no way to clear the message. The VNC Server program is up to date with what is in the repository. It is using the repository deb http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/ buster main contrib non-free rpi

    Please fix! Thanks!
