No Sound at VNC Viewer from VNC Server with Enterprise License

I have enabled audio in the Options>Users & Permissions on the Server and set the volume to 100 on the VNC Viewer, but I am still not hearing any audio. The Speaker icon is gray on the VNC Viewer. I am using Direct TCP type of connection. Is audio possible for this configuration?

    Hi Kenneth,

Audio is only supported on UDP connections to the VNC Server.

    Kind regards,

    Jack

  • Does this mean that audio is never possible when using virtual mode?

  • Hi,

Virtual Mode and the Virtual Mode daemon support UDP connections so audio is possible!

  • Thanks, Jack. I am running Virtual Mode on RHEL 8 and I don't get audio. Pulseaudio is started but the client does not show any audio devices. I see both TCP and UDP traffic between client and server. My user has standard desktop permissions including "hear audio." I've looked at the Audio FAQ but nothing there applies. Any troubleshooting tips?

  • Hi,

We'll probably need to check logs and your system configuration to look into this further. Please can you submit a ticket and we'll be in touch to assist further?

  • Thanks Jack - I answered my own question and this may be helpful for others. On RHEL 8 pam_systemd has to be in the session module or audio won't work. If you have a custom PAM stack, this is important. Audio works now! Maybe this is useful for others as well.
