VNC Server 6.7.2 or 6.7.4 installs into USER MODE with no taskbar icon

Hi Guys, I hope you can help me please.    We have just 3 users using VNC Connect (with VNC Server in 'Service Mode') which was working well however one PC hard drive crashed.    This device has been repaired with a new SSD drive and a totally new, clean Windows 10-20H2 installation.    Having then attempted to re-instate VNC Server onto this PC, it fails to run, there is no Taskbar icon and the VNC Viewer user gets an error that the 'server is not accepting connections'.

As background - the VNCServer installation seems to go as expected, completes and the 'Sign in to licence VNC Server' window appears. Having entered email and password, the window to give a device password comes up and that's entered, the install continues, shows the PC name & description and states "This computer is now ready to receive connections from VNC Viewer" ... but it is NOT ready.

Having looked at several documents on the website I have also tried running VNCServer.exe and this does then put the icon onto the taskbar, with a red x. Upon inspection the installation seems to have defaulted to 'User Mode' and there is no option to look at or configure settings, other than 'Enter Enterprise Licence'. Although I also found information on your website, I cannot see any way to change the 'mode' to 'Service'.

Any help would be much appreciated please as I have tried several times to re-install this, including ensuring the 'Program Data\RealVNC' folder is deleted after un-install & then the PC rebooted before re-trying the installation.

Thanks.

    Hi Nigel,

Sorry to hear about this! Are you connecting over RDP when you see these issues?

  • Hi Jack

Yes I'm remoted to the PC using Datto (formerly CentraStage) RDP.    I'm pretty sure that I have previously installed VNC Server successfully in the same way over RDP last year though as I wasn't able to get hands-on the actual PC.    Thanks.

  • Hi Jack

Today I was able to get to site and sit directly at the PC.    I'm pleased to say that I was then able to simply add the credentials to the installed VNC server and it is now working.    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Nigel,

I'm pleased to hear that you got everything up and running on-site with the PC. We are looking to improve the experience when installing over RDP in the near future.

    Thanks,

    Jack

  • Hello Jack,

I have seen more question like this in the chatroom and I had the same issue in the past.

Going onside is not every time possible and will take time.

Is there no other way to switch the application back to service mode and add a user to it?

All done via Remote Desktop what is only working at this moment.

    THX upfront

  • Hi Andreas,

There are no updates for a GUI experience unfortunately but you can change RealVNC Server's configuration directly in the Registry under the following key:

    HKLM\Software\RealVNC\vncserver

If you're working with Users & Permissions, you can use the VNC Permissions Creator (https://help.realvnc.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002253618-Managing-Users-and-Session-Permissions-for-RealVNC-Server#using-vnc-permissions-creator-0-2) to easily generate the updated value.

    Thanks,

    Jack

  • Hello Jack,

I export the missing REGKEY "Permissions" from a other PC and import on the one where it's not working.

Now I can login again via RealVNC.

    THX for the feedback.
