Two new monitors now experiencing a ton of issues with Real VNC Server/Viewer?!

Hi all,

Okay, I was using two (2) Dell UltraSharp U2212HM 21.5" monitors (1920x1080) and both connected with display port for many years without problems. RealVNC also worked without issues when I had to access my computer remotely from a different computer or with my Android phone. I could always turn both monitors off and still connect to my computer and would see both monitors in one full resolution. So it was all good!

Now I recently upgraded my monitors with two new monitors: Samsung S60UA 24" (2560x1440) monitors. They are both connected also by display port connector. Just like my previous 2x Dell monitor setup. The monitors are great (higher resolution, 10bit display, etc.). But now the problems start with RealVNC...

The first time I tested it, it was working with RealVNC. I was able to see both monitors in one full resolution screen. This was identical as with the Dell monitors. So all good. However, now the problems started. When I turn the monitors off and I tried to connect I was seeing a black screen and couldn't do anything remote!

So I searched and searched. And I did see the following article: https://help.realvnc.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004012211-Display-issues-when-connecting-to-RealVNC-Server-running-on-Windows

First I read this: The issue is most commonly seen when connecting to a computer with no monitors attached (headless), or a monitor using HDMI/DisplayPort is connected but powered off.

I was like okay. But my older Dell monitors were also both using DisplayPort connections and I never experienced this issue with those monitors. I could turn them completely off and still connect to it without issues (both monitors would be displayed as one big windows/screen resolution).

I also tried a HDMI dummy plug, which I still had around because of two mining rigs I ran a year 1,5 ago. It does do something as it created a third monitor, which I had to disable because otherwise I could move my mouse to the right side (out of sigh).

Connecting the HDMI dummy plug into my videocard did improve things a little. When I connect through VNC, I could see the desktop. However only one screen is visible. The other is not visible. So it's not showing the complete view of both monitors. Sigh.

Again I never had these issues with the older Dell monitors (produced in October 2013). Even when these were turned completely off, I could always connect to the VNC Server and view both monitors (as one big resolution). With the new Samsung monitors this is not possible...

I already updated all drivers (incl. videocard, monitor drivers, VNC, Windows 11, etc. etc. etc.). But no luck at all...

Is there a working solution which I can apply to my desktop computer so I can still view both monitors as one resolution screen? The only other solution which seems to work, is to leave the monitors on set the monitor sleep time lower in Windows 11 Energy Profile...

Then it works as it wakes the monitor. However... This has one major issue; the monitors also turn on the location and everything I am doing is visible. This is also not something I want. I just want to be able to connect to my desktop and both monitors (as one big screen resolution) with the monitors being turned off completely. The same as with my previous Dell monitors.

Anyone got a solution for this? Or a working workaround?

Regards,
Mik

    Hi all,

Thanks for your posts and I understand your concerns about our response times. Our support team aim to respond to all customer enquiries within 1 business day, between 10AM and 9PM UK time, Monday to Friday, however we are experiencing an extremely high volume of requests and responses are taking longer than we'd like. If you can provide me with your ticket reference numbers I will ensure they are actioned promptly.

The above does not apply to posts on our community forum here.

Regarding the issue on this thread, it sounds like the issue is being caused by Windows and the new monitors triggering a monitor disconnect/hotplug event so its no longer registered as an active display, meaning RealVNC Server can't capture it. At the moment while there are some software based approaches you can try, as defined in the linked article, the most reliable approach is to ensure the monitors stay active either turned on, or using an EDID emulator/passthrough dongle.

To prevent the remote monitors being visible when turned on, RealVNC Connect does include a screen blanking feature, which can be enabled as shown here: https://help.realvnc.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016511452
Note, this feature requires a paid subscription to RealVNC Connect.

    Kind regards,

    Jack N

  • Seems nobody cares or is using RealVNC anymore. Will look into alternative and not purchase future versions anymore. Sorry to say... Oh well. RealVNC was great when it lasted.

  • I'm with you, Mik.  The tech support team has put together well-crafted documents and help pages to address common issues.  However, for custom answers, I hear only crickets.  My post regarding how to turn on a third site with a 3 business licenses has gone to sleep.  Without that capability, I need to bail.  Most of the RealVNC product is professional and first rate.  Too bad technical support isn't up to that standard.

  • Exactly Bill...

Well I dropped my 2 business licenses. I doubt RealVNC will care anyways. And trying various other solutions. Nothing conclusive, but support is everywhere faster and better! Byebye RealVNC (been a customer for almost 7 years).
