Black screen only on MacOS login

When a user is logged into the affected MacOS device (Intel iMac Pro on Sonoma), RealVNC works as expected, but when a user logs out, RealVNC only shows a black screen with a mouse cursor. Sometimes, on a fresh reboot, I might be able to see and control the login screen, but this consistently stops working once a user logs in and out.

This is on a fresh install of Sonoma, with screen record and accessibility permissions allowed for vncagent and RealVNC Server applications, and Filevault is not enabled for this device.

I have also tested a similar device - an M1 MacBook Pro - using the same settings, and this test device does not experience the same issue, I am able to see and control the screen regardless of if a user is logged in or not.

  • I am experiencing the same issue. I tested accessing the MBP locally, thinking it may be a network or firewall issue. I experienced the same situation. has anyone else experienced or resolved this?

  • Is there any answer for this?  Can't get a hold of anyone at support and their articles are useless on taking care of this issue.  =(

  • Here is what worked for me. Steps I took in this order:

    For both systems:

    • Verified the latest macOS installed
    • Installed latest VNC Server package
    • Completed system restart

On the destination system after restarting:

    • In System Settings | Privacy & Security —>
    • Removed/Added ‘vncagent’, ‘vncserver', ‘VNC Viewer’, and ‘VNC Server' to “Full Disk Access”, “Files and Folders”, “Accessibility”, ‘Input Monitoring”, and "Screen & System Audio Recording” (see screenshot)

The ‘vncagent' and ‘vncserver' are located in ~/Library/vnc

Since completing these steps, I have resolved the issues.
