Less than sign "<" key on the host does not transmit to the remote computer

I am using macOS realvnc version 7.8 (also seen in 7.7) where I am remotely connected to a Linux endpoint using KDE.  All keys work properly except the less than symbol "<".  When I type "<" from the macOS remote computer, it produces the greater than symbol ">" on the Linux endpoint.  I tried typing from the host to 5 different remote programs on the Linux endpoint but the result is the same.  I can copy and paste from the host to the remote computer. I am using an en_US QWERTY keyboard built into a mac laptop, macOS Big Sur 11.5.2.
