VNC Server doesn't open in Debian 12

I'm running a fresh Debian 12 installation on a Dell Wyse 5070. I logged in to realvnc.com and downloaded the Debian install VNC-Connect-Installer-2.2.1-Linux-x64.tar.gz, unpacked it and ran VNC-Connect-Installer-2.2.1-Linux-x64. I see that realvnc-vnc-server  and realvnc-vnc-viewer 7.8.0.51458 successfully installed via dpkg -l reanlvnc*.

When I attempt to launch RealVNC Server, I'm prompted to enter my password to be able to run VNC Server as an administrator. After clicking the Authenticate button, the login dialog closes, but the server app does not launch.

I don't see any errors in the vncserver-x11.log, nor do I see any errors when running journalctl -f.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Max

  • Aaaaand just a little more digging in Google as well as the kb, and found that Wayland needs to be disabled on Debian 10+ installations. For that, simply uncomment the line #WaylandEnable=false in /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf.
