The VNC Server tray icon is not available in Gnome

By default, no VNC Server icon is displayed when you start VNC Server on a Linux computer running Gnome desktop environment 3.26 or later.

This is because Gnome's legacy tray is not available. However, you can use the Top Icons extension to provide an alternative tray at the top right of the screen in which the VNC Server icon can be displayed. To do this:

  1. Install the gnome-shell-extension-top-icons-plus and gnome-tweak-tool packages.
  2. Run gnome-tweaks
  3. Turn on the Top Icons extension.
